The Kitchen

We hold the record for the slowest kitchen renovation in history. I know -HGTV would have told us that the cabinets needed to be replaced.  We say conserve the money, conserve the history, conserve the landfill.  Not counting new appliances, this kitchen renovation cost under $1400.  Tell that to the folks at HGTV.

Jan 05:  Plastic laminate wall covering, stained/cracked laminate counter, industrial style lighting.

May 05:  Remove all the garbage that covered the beaded board walls and ceiling, patch beaded board where needed.
No, we weren't living in the house yet!

June 05  New appliances, primer on the walls.  Functional. Time to move in.

Feb 06  New wiring and shelving above the stove for the microwave.  New lighting, paint, & cabinet hardware.
At least it's not embarrassing anymore.

October 07  A new built-in cabinet on the right, tile countertops on the left.

December 07  Finally reaching the artistic stage - a mosaic breakfast bar.

January 08  New backsplash.

The Details

The Back Door
This is Florida, and the outside must be brought in.  So we opened up all this ugliness by taking out the wall that divided up the kitchen space, and added a new door that we go in and out of about 50 times a day.

The New Cabinet
I built this out of all salvaged wood.  The doors are from a previously owned  house, and the frame and top are from the above wall we took down.  With only a little extra hand from Frank, I'm proud of my most complicated cabinet building to date.

The cutting board and trash are stowed away.

Gorgeous wood grain!

The Counter
Frank salvaged the 12" grey tile before someone could throw it way. Scrounging around pays off again.

The Mosaic
Next came a small mosaic shelf/breakfast bar using scrap tile and some little baubles and beads I'd not been able to throw away over the years.

I even managed to work my "signature" into the piece.
